A black bear and her cub have been seen on the property the past two nights. The cub was up in the large Ponderosa Pine in our parking area with mom closely watching from below. As we watched through the windows in the lobby, the cub climbed down the tree and ran towards mom and both ambled across the road towards Fall River.

I got a good look at the bear last night. After being chased from the dumpster, he came down later in the night to lap up as much humming bird food as he could!

It's been kind of quiet in the wildlife department as of late. The elk have been stopping by and the little critters are still scampering about. Steve, our maintenance man, stocked out seasonal pond with some trout, so it's fun to go watch them a little bit. The first fish to ever live at McGregor Mountain Lodge!

June 13, 2008
The bull elk are growing their antlers very quickly. We've seen foxes and mule deer as well. A black bear has even made an appearance!

Bighorn, foxes, elk, birds, squirrels, chipmonks...it was an idyllic evening here at McGregor. All of these animals were on the property at the same time looking completely at home...almost like a dream!

April 27, 2008

January 21, 2008
The bighorn have been seen as of late. Just ewes and lambs, no rams lately. But it's nice to see them with a bit of regularity. The elk still make their daily rounds and the mule deer have been keeping a low profile this winter. Birds, squirrels and other smaller critters are being seen as often as ever!

November 26, 2007
Elk and Mule Deer everywhere you look! I need to get out the camera and get busy! We've had so many people driving through the property just because they know the elk are hanging out! It's great!

Elk, elk, elk!! We are having an elk party here at the lodge! Five or six large bulls have been around on a daily basis. This morning they all came around over the course of a half an hour and grazed on the hillside and all took their turn seeing what the bird feeders had to offer.

October 25, 2007
We have a healthy number of visitors from the wildlife world! Every morning I'm having coffee watching mule deer graze outside the lobby. We have elk and bighorn making almost daily visits to the property and the small critters are thick. Chippies and rabbits are all over the place!

October 15, 2007
It's most definitely wildlife season again at McGregor! The past few days we have seen the bighorn sheep, who were just down again, we've seen mule deer and three large bull elk have been hanging around the area as well. Fall in the rockies!!

October 12, 2007
Yesterday evening a group of bighorn came down and spent about half an hour at the northwest corner of the property. They didn't stay long as guests surrounded them and the retreated up the mountain-side. When given their space and viewed from a slight distance, they will often come down into the middle of the property and stay for hours at a time!

October 5, 2007
The big news of the morning is that two guests reported seeing a mountain lion on the property right at sunrise (a bit before 7:00). There have also been coyotes around as well as a large bull with a broken antler, no doubt a victim of the rut!

September 21, 2007
The bear was down last night and I got a good look at him! He is huge!! The biggest bear I have seen here in Colorado, easily. Too bad I didn't have my camera handy! We have also had marmots, elk and the fox hanging out.

Elk were bugling all around the valley in the early morning hours from about 5:30 to 8:00. The rut is about to get into full swing. The bears have also been down and around. There were some muddy bear tracks all over the property this morning.

Once again, the bull elk have been seen on property. It's about time for the rut and I've even heard some bugling in the evenings. The bear has been around too...I havn't seen it but heard it by the dumpsters last night and the have been other "signs" left around the property!

September 1, 2007
